PCB Transformers
- PCB oil is drained from transformers, capacitors, switchgear and other electrical equipment on site.
- Low-level PCB transformers still in service are retro-filled to bring them down to <50 ppm for redesignation as active non-PCB equipment.
- High-level PCB core/coils and oil in existing PCB transformer tanks is removed, the interior tank cleaned and the core/coil is replaced.
- The former PCB transformer is retrofilled with new mineral oil for designation as <50 transformer and turned back into service.
Note: GPE successfully replaced seven askarel transformers at Pearson International Airport for the GTAA, two of which were core/coil replacements.
Non-PCB Transformers
- Oil-filled transformers are individually tested to <50 ppm.
- Units are drained and double drained of all oil.
- All residual oil
is also recovered for recycling purposes.
- Units are cleaned and all non recyclable materials are segregated, tested and packaged for disposal.
- The metals are recycled.
